Pea Harvest In Final Stages

PANAMA - Sep 18/16 - SNS -- Canada's field pea harvest is in its final stages, while the quality of the crop is close to the recent five-year average.

Rain and disease had an impact on quality, but not to the same extent as lentils or chickpeas. Saskatchewan Agriculture reckons 16% of crop thought to be grading No 3 Canada or lower, compared to 9% last year and the recent average of 10%. Problems with dirt tagging and disease are also reported in Alberta, but there is not a similar break down by grade.

Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) data is not helpful in verifying the provincial grade estimates because it does not break down product in terminals on a grade basis. In the case of pulses and special crops, the CGC only provides this data for lentils and mustard seed.
