China's Role in Dry Beans Weakens

DALIAN - Sep 2/16 - SNS -- China's presence in international dry edible bean markets will continue to diminish for at least the coming year, believe exporters attending this year's China Pulse Import and Export Industry Conference here.

Declining production and a worsening reputation among buyers have made it increasingly difficult for exporters to attract the attention of buyers. Offsetting this, however, has been a tangible increase in domestic pulse consumption.

The shift is reflected in China's trade data. During the 2010 through 2013 calendar years, exports averaged 1.07 million metric tons (MT) per year while imports averaged 789,000. Exports only averaged 533,000 MT during the previous two calendar years, while imports averaged 891,000. Over the six years, exports peaked at 1.1 million MT in 2012 and imports peaked at 1.06 million in 2013.
