MELBOURNE - Aug 30/16 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Weather Situation A high pressure system over the Tasman Sea will move slowly east during the next few days, extending a firm ridge into eastern Queensland. Moisture levels are increasing across the state as winds tend more onshore about the eastern Queensland coast. An upper level trough will approach far southwest Queensland today and then move eastwards across the southern interior on Wednesday whilst weakening. A more significant trough system will likely approach southwestern Queensland on Thursday and move east across the interior of the state on Friday. Forecast for the rest of TuesdayA slight chance of a light shower about the east coast and eastern interior north of about Fraser Island. A cloud band with a high to very high chance of showers and patchy rain extends into southwestern Queensland, with the slight chance of a thunderstorm in this area in the evening. Moderate to fresh north to northeasterly winds in the west ahead of a late light to moderate south to southwesterly wind change in the far southwest. Moderate to fresh east to northeast winds elsewhere, strong at times over far northern waters.Wednesday 31 AugustThe slight to medium chance of showers and drizzle areas over eastern Queensland, mostly north of Fraser Island, and particularly about the east tropical coast and ranges. A band of cloud and patchy, mostly light rain should move east across southern districts but is expected to weaken before reaching the southeast coast. The very slight chance of a thunderstorm in the early morning in the far southwest. Conditions should remain fine and mostly sunny through the northwest of the state and much of the northern and central interior. Moderate to fresh north to northeasterly winds over the interior, tending moderate south to southeasterly in the west. Moderate to fresh southeast to northeasterly winds elsewhere.Thursday 1 SeptemberThe ridge about the east Queensland coast will gradually relax as the high moves to the northeast of New Zealand. The northeasterly wind flow will continue to produce showers and drizzle areas over eastern districts, mainly about the east coast and ranges. Another more significant upper trough and associated surface trough will approach southwestern Queensland, extending a band of rain and possible isolated thunderstorms into areas southwest of about Boulia to Cunnamulla. Some moderate rainfall amounts are likely, possibly locally heavy. Patchy light rain will extend further east into the southern interior during the day. The far northwest of the state and much of the northern and central interior will remain fine.Friday 2 SeptemberThe upper trough and associated surface trough should move east over the southern half of the state with rain areas and possible thunderstorms reaching areas to the southwest of about Mt Isa to Emerald to Goondiwindi by the late evening. Some moderate rainfall amounts are likely, possibly locally heavy. Showers will also develop over much of the interior elsewhere during the day, while shower and drizzle activity will likely persist along much of the east coast and adjacent inland in the moist northeasterly wind flow.Saturday 3 SeptemberThe upper trough and associated surface trough should clear east into the Coral Sea during Saturday, with the band of cloud and rain areas also contracting offshore out of areas east of about Emerald and south of about Mackay during the day. The slight to moderate chance of a shower along the east coast otherwise, with the slight chance of an afternoon shower about the Gulf Country.Sunday until TuesdayA high moving east over southern Australia will extend a ridge and fine and sunny conditions into much of the state on Sunday in the wake of the trough. Cooler conditions will also return form Sunday onwards with possible frosts over the southeast interior.
