Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Aug 29/16 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A high pressure system over eastern New South Wales will move slowly east across the Tasman Sea during the next few days, extending a firm ridge into eastern Queensland. Moisture levels gradually increase across the state from today as winds tend more onshore about the east Queensland coast. An upper level trough is expected to approach far southwest Queensland on Tuesday and then move eastwards across the southern interior on Wednesday whilst weakening. A more significant trough system will likely approach southwestern Queensland on Thursday and move east across the interior of the state on Friday.
Forecast for the rest of MondayPossible early frost patches about the southern central and southeast interior, more likely about the Granite Belt. Early morning fog patches over eastern districts, mostly inland. The slight to medium chance of showers and drizzle areas about the north of Cape York Peninsula, also developing about the remaining east tropical coast later in the day. High cloud increasing through the southwest but with no rainfall expected. Fine and sunny elsewhere. Moderate to fresh and gusty northerly winds in the west. Moderate to fresh southeast to northeasterly winds elsewhere, strong at times over far northeastern waters.Tuesday 30 AugustThe high will move east across the Tasman Sea whilst strengthening, maintaining the firm ridge along the east Queensland coast. A slight to medium chance of showers or drizzle are possible about the east coast and eastern interior north of about Fraser Island in an onshore flow. An upper trough and associated surface trough are expected to approach the southwest of the state during the day, extending a cloud band with showers and patchy rain into southwest parts. Warmer minimum temperatures will result in just the chance of possible light frost about the Granite Belt.Wednesday 31 AugustThe high pressure system will move further east closer to New Zealand. The high will maintain a ridge and onshore wind flow over eastern Queensland with showers and drizzle areas expected, particularly about the east tropical coast and ranges. The upper trough will move east across southern Queensland but is expected to weaken through the day. A band of cloud and patchy, mostly light rain should move east across southern districts but is expected to weaken before reaching the southeast coast. Conditions should remain fine and mostly sunny through the northwest of the state and much of the northern and central interior.Thursday 1 SeptemberThe ridge about the east Queensland coast will gradually relax as the high moves to the northeast of New Zealand. The northeasterly wind flow will continue to produce showers and drizzle areas over eastern districts, mainly about the east coast and ranges. Another more significant upper trough and associated surface trough will approach southwestern Queensland, extending a band of rain and possible isolated thunderstorms into areas southwest of about Boulia to Cunnamulla. Some moderate rainfall amounts are likely, possibly locally heavy. Patchy light rain will extend further east into the southern interior during the day. The far northwest of the state and much of the northern and central interior will remain fine.Friday until SundayThe upper trough and associated surface trough should move east over the southern half of the state on Friday before clearing east into the Coral Sea during Saturday. This system should generate a band of cloud and rain areas with possible thunderstorms that shifts eastwards with the trough passage across central and southern areas of the state. A high moving east over southern Australia will extend a ridge and fine and sunny conditions into much of the state on Sunday in the wake of the trough. Cooler conditions will also return on Sunday with possible frosts over the southeast interior. Some shower activity will likely persist about the north tropical coast during the outlook period. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 pm EST Monday.Product IDQ10700
