Desi Chickpeas Worry About 2017

PANAMA - Aug20/16 - SNS -- Large caliber kabuli chickpea markets maintained their firm tone through the past week, but desi type chickpeas were easier against worries about the depth of demand on the Indian subcontinent after February.

Australia is the largest producer of desi chickpeas outside the Indian subcontinent, with this year's crop expected to reach 1.1 million metric tons (MT) from 1.9 million acres.

Trade data for Australia suggests that this is at least as many chickpeas as Australia grew last year. The issue facing Australia is that by the end of Jun e it had already exported almost as many chickpeas as it grew.
