Peas Liked Rain, Lentils Hated It

PANAMA - Aug 18/16 - SNS -- Canada's field peas fared better during this summer's rains than its lentils, suggest yield predictions from provincial agriculture departments.

Official yield forecasts will be released by Statistics Canada on August 23, based on surveys of farmers at the end of July. Provincial forecasts are based on submissions by crop reporters who monitor conditions in their area throughout the growing season.

The numbers suggest lentil yields are 11% below their recent five-year average at 1,300 pounds per acre; while field pea yields are up 13% at 2.471 pounds; chickpeas are down 25% at 1,300 pounds; canaryseed yields are up 12% at 1,190 pounds; and mustard seed yields are up 40% at 1,193 pounds per acre.
