Tension in Field Peas

PANAMA - Aug 14/16 - SNS -- International field pea markets finished the week on a tense note against concern over crop in parts of Canada and the United States.

Worries were enhanced by the fact average yields in France collapsed almost 34% on account of rainy growing season. The net result was that despite a 4.5% increase in seeded area to 184,000 hectares, production is down almost 31% at 459,00 metric tons (MT).

The decline reflects the impact of increased disease activity and the loss of some crops in fields due to rotting and the inability of farmers to harvest some fields. This has enhanced concern in Canada, where some regions have experienced well above normal rainfall. As a result, 26% of Saskatchewan's farmland has excess topsoil moisture and 70% is rated as adequate.
