Chickpea Stocks Tight Until 2017

PANAMA - Jul 31/16 - SNS -- Chickpea markets maintained their firm tone through the past week, helped by fundamental shortages of both kabuli and desi type product.

Availability of large kabuli chickpeas has been affected by the failure of the Mexican harvest. Meanwhile, the failure of desi chickpea crops on the Indian subcontinent earlier in the year left the world with an unfillable shortage of desi type chickpeas.

In both cases, gaps in world supply are not expected to be filled until the second quarter of 2017, assuming there are no problems with rabi season crops on the Indian subcontinent and Mexican output.
