Moisture Stress in Peas, Lentils

REGINA - Jul 21/16 - SNS -- Moisture stress is becoming a bigger issue in field pea and lentil crops in parts of Saskatchewan, according to the latest crop report from the provincial agriculture department.

"Lentils and peas in many areas of the province are suffering from too much moisture," Saskatchewan Agriculture said, noting that topsoil moisture across the province is rated as 22% surplus, 76% adequate and 2% short.

"Significant amounts of rain fell on much of the province throughout the week. Precipitation varies from trace amounts to 98 mm. Heavy rain over the past couple of weeks has caused crops to lodge, and they remain under flooding stress in some areas."

Interestingly, though crop development remains ahead of normal for a significant portion of pulses crops, the proportion which is behind normal or average increased during the past week, reflecting the impact of moisture stress on crops.
