Lentil Quality Worries Deepen

PANAMA - Jul 17/16 - SNS -- Lentil crops are developing rapidly in Canada and parts of the United States, with initial harvest activity in the earliest sown fields reported during the past week.

Weather forecasters are looking for a return to hot and dry conditions across much of the growing area in Saskatchewan, which will help dry down fields and accelerate crop development. Heading into the week, Saskatchewan Agriculture said 27% of all pulses crops were ahead of normal development and 70% developing at an average pace for the middle of July.

Markets remain deeply concerned about the quality of this year's crop, expecting that plant diseases will hurt the quality of lentils in affected fields. Moreover, if ripe crops cannot be harvested between rainfall events, there can be further quality loss from weathering.
