Disease Pressure Worries Lentils

PANAMA - Jul 9/16 - SNS -- Lentil markets were somewhat concerned by the latest crop progress report from Saskatchewan because of comments that fields in many areas face high disease pressure on account of moist conditions.

The growing season has been hotter and wetter than normal. This has propelled crop development, but also created perfect conditions for plant diseases, forcing farmers to apply fungicides to lentils and all other crops.

Plant diseases lower the yield potential of fields, while the moist and warm growing conditions would have been expected to boost the yield potential. For this reason, traders involved with other field crops have talk about the potential for bumper yields this year.
