New Crop Transition Starting in Peas

PANAMA - Jul 9/16 - SNS -- International field pea markets are starting to make the transition into new crop with the approaching harvest in France and faster than normal crop development in Canada and parts of the United States.

In its latest crop progress report, Saskatchewan Agriculture noted that 3% of all pulse crops sown this year are podding, while 69% are flowering and 27% are still in the vegetative stage.

Field pea markets were also surprised to see India plant more pulses during the past week than its farmers had sown during the first week of July at any time in the past.

They planted 2.6 million hectares of pulses during the first week of July. While this is the best start to the month on record, the quantity of land sown is not unprecedented. The best week on record was the third week of July in 2013, when farmers planted 4.2 million hectares of pulses.
