Chickpea Exports Surging

PANAMA - Jul 8/16 - SNS -- Canadian chickpeas reached 13,061 metric tons (MT) in May, according to Statistics Canada, while the quantity loaded to bulk carriers during the month was just 500 MT.

So far during the 2015-16 marketing year, Canada has exported 125,975 MT of chickpeas, ,more than double the 61,440 MT shipped between August and September of the 2014-15 season. Bulk loadings were also higher, with the Canadian Grain Commission reporting they advanced from 4,600 to 5,100 MT during the same 10-month period.

The CGC data does not include exports in containers or from non-reporting terminals. It is important to recall that the CGC data may not match official export data. The CGC counts product when it is loaded to ships, while Statistics Canada bases its calculations on the bill of lading date.
