Second Smallest Safflower Crop

WASHINGTON - Jun 30/16 - SNS -- Planted area of safflower decreased 11% from 2015, to 150,000 acres in 2016, according to the USDA's seeded area estimates for 2016.

This is the second lowest planted area for the Nation since records began in 1991. Area for harvest is forecast at 144,700 acres, down 9% from last year.

Growers in Montana, the second largest State in terms of planted area in 2015, planted only 35,000 acres this year, a decline of 30% from last year. Beginning in 2016, safflower estimates were discontinued in Colorado.
