U.S. Rye Area Up 12%

WASHINGTON - Jun 30/16 - SNS -- The 2016 planted area for rye in the U.S. is estimated at 1.76 million acres, up 12% from 2015, according to the USDA's seeded area estimates for 2016.

Harvested area is expected to total 443,000 acres, up 23% from last year. Planted and harvested area is up from last year due to the addition of four states to the estimating program.

As of June 26, Georgia producers had harvested 96% of the rye crop, equal to the 5-year average pace. In Oklahoma, 60% of the rye crop was harvested by June 26, eleven percentage points behind the 5-year average pace.

Estimates began in 2016 for Maine, Maryland, New Jersey, and Virginia.
