Kharif Seeding Advances

PANAMA - Jun 26/16 - SNS -- International field pea markets finished the week on a relatively quiet note, with spot markets influenced by tightening supplies and new crop by prospects for expanding supplies.

Markets are also watching the progress of this year's monsoon and kharif seeding in India. Those are key events for demand prospects in 2017.

Seeding of this year's kharif season made relatively good progress during the past week, though the gap between the amount seeded this year and last year widened because of the slow advance of initial monsoon rains across the country. This is expected to change quickly and forecasters think that after a delayed start, the monsoon will cover the entire country earlier than normal.

As of June 24, land in pulses is down 21% from last year at 966,000 hectares. On the other hand, during the previous five year's farmers had only planted an average 695,000 hectares by this time in June.
