Chickpea Markets Wait in Area Reports

PANAMA - Jun 26/16 - SNS -- North American chickpea markets are hoping to see good guidance about how many acres were planted this year in seeded area estimates due for release from both Statistics Canada and the USDA.

Between the two reports, there is probably more confidence in estimates from the USDA than Statistics Canada. There are a couple of reasons this is the case.

One is the belief that the USDA has a vested interest in the numbers because of the fact chickpeas are included in farm support programs in the United States. Another is that because more chickpeas are grown in the United States than in Canada, there are fewer sampling errors.
