Faster Than Normal Development

REGINA - Jun 23/16 - SNS -- Pulse crops in Saskatchewan are developing faster than normal this year, with 20% of the crop ahead of normal and 76% at a normal state of development for the third week of June.

In its latest crop report, Saskatchewan Agriculture said because of "continued precipitation and warm weather, crop growth and development in most parts of the province are well ahead of normal. . . .

"Overall, 99% of the fall cereals, 96% of the pulse crops, 95% of the spring cereals and 94% of the oilseeds are at or ahead of their normal stage of development for this time of year. The majority of the crops are in good-to-excellent condition.

Most of Saskatchewan received rain during the past week, ranging from trace amounts to 80 mm, with the average being 25 mm. Across the province, topsoil moisture conditions on cropland are rated as 6% surplus, 86% adequate and 8% short. Topsoil moisture is lowest in Crop District 4B in the southwest at 38% short and wettest in crop district CD2B with 26% of the land reported to contain surplus moisture.
