Peas Worry About Weather

PANAMA - Jun 17/16 - SNS -- Field pea exports around the globe are becoming increasingly anxious about wetter than normal growing conditions in France, eastern Europe and parts of Canada.

Rains have already had a negative impact on prospective grain yields in some areas, raising concern about their impact on field pea yields.

The worry extends to Canada, where crops are rated in such good condition that some market participants think they now only have the potential to lose yields.

In its latest weekly crop report, Saskatchewan Agriculture said 32% of the field pea crop was in excellent condition, while 63% was good and 5% rated fair. Overall pulse crop development is rated 20% ahead of normal, 73% normal for the middle of June, and just 7% behind normal. Moreover, moisture is not a problem. Topsoil moisture conditions on cropland are rated as 4% surplus, 85% adequate, 9% short and 2% very short.
