Strong Chickpea Export Movement

PANAMA - Jun 4/16 - SNS -- International chickpea markets maintained their firm tone through the past week, with importers continuing to look for additional product.

Interest spans all qualities and sizes, with some buyers on the Indian subcontinent hoping to find cheaper alternatives to desi chickpeas in small caliber, farmer's dressed kabuli chickpeas.

The strength of demand was reflected in the latest official export data from Canada and Australia.

Canada's official shipments reached 16,790 metric tons (MT) in April, lifting export clearances for the marketing year to almost 113,000 MT. Exports are now on track to make this the third best year for Canadian chickpea exports since shipments hit a record 178,783 MT during the 2000-01 marketing campaign.
