Russian Pulse Exports Rising

PANAMA - Jun 2/16 - SNS -- Pulse exports from Russia started the 2016 calendar year on a strong note, jumping 45% over last year during the first two months of the current calendar year.

Total exports reached 131,900 metric tons (MT), compared to imports of just 6,335 MT of all categories of pulses, according to data published in the platinum version of STAT.

Field peas and chickpeas dominate pulse exports from Russia. During the past five years, field peas accounted for an average 64% of all pulses exports, compared to a 34% market share for chickpeas and 2% for lentils. So far this year, field peas accounted for 91% of exports and chickpeas 9%,, compared to a 50-50 split at the start of the 2015 calendar year.

Official trade data for the country shows that Turkey is the most important destination for both field peas and chickpeas, followed by the Indian subcontinent. In the case of field peas, Turkey was the destination for an average 49% of all exports in recent years, compared to taking 58% of all chickpea shipments.
