MELBOURNE - May 23/16 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Weather Situation An upper trough is moving eastwards over far northern Queensland and will weaken through the remainder of today. Another upper trough will approach northwest Queensland late tomorrow and move eastwards across the north of the state on Wednesday, maintaining instability across far northern areas. A surface trough and an associated dry south to southwesterly wind change will continue to move eastwards over the southern interior of the state during the remainder of today and move into the southeast of the state on Tuesday. Forecast for the rest of MondayRain areas, showers and isolated storms over northern areas northeast of about Kowanyama to Cairns. Patchy rain extending through the southern tropics and central coast. A slight to medium chance of showers and storms in the northwest of the state into the northeastern Channel Country and Central West. Fine and mostly clear in the southeast. Fresh and gusty southerly winds extending east over the southern interior. Mostly light winds elsewhere, tending moderate to fresh southeasterly over the northeast tropics.Tuesday 24 MayMostly cloudy with a medium chance of showers north of about Century Mine to Townsville, increasing to a high chance about the north tropical coast. A medium to high chance of showers over Cape York Peninsula and far northern Gulf Country with isolated storms. The slight chance of showers over the southern tropics and through central districts. Fine and mostly sunny through much of the central interior and across the south of the state. The chance of early frost about the Granite Belt. Moderate southwest to southeasterly winds, fresh about the northeast tropical coast.Fire Danger - Very High in the Darling Downs and Granite Belt and Wide Bay and Burnett districts.Wednesday 25 MayThe new upper trough will likely move east over the north of the state, generating some patchy rain or showers over northern districts, with possible isolated storms through the Peninsula district. The slight to medium chance of showers or patchy rain will extend south into the interior north of Longreach and also to the central coast. A high pressure system near the southern Queensland coast will result in fine and mostly sunny conditions through the southeast. Some early morning frost is likely about the Maranoa and Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts.Thursday 26 MayThe upper trough should contract off the east coast into the Coral Sea. The ridge along the east coast will weaken though the slight to medium chance of showers will persist over the northeastern tropics and near the central coast in the weakening onshore wind flow. A new upper trough will most likely move north over New South Wales, extending a patchy cloud band into the far southern interior of Queensland with some light rain developing. Fine and mostly sunny conditions are expected elsewhere. The chance of early frost will persist about the Granite Belt. A surface trough will also most likely enter the far southwest of the state late in the day.Friday 27 MayThe upper trough will most likely shift further northeast into the southern interior of Queensland, generating a cloud band with patchy light rain about the far south of the state, mainly south of about Birdsville to the Sunshine Coast. A surface trough will also move eastwards across the south of the state with cool, southwesterly winds its wake. A slight chance of showers about the Gulf Country and across Cape York Peninsula. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. A slight chance of early frost about the Granite Belt.Saturday until MondayThe upper trough should shift eastwards off the southern coast on Saturday with the surface trough also contracting off the east coast on Saturday. A cold, dry south to southwesterly wind change will extend over the state in the wake of this surface trough. Most of the state should therefore be fine and mostly sunny with only isolated showers about the central and northern east coast from Sunday.
