Above Average Seeding Progress in Saskatchewan

PANAMA - May 12/16 - SNS -- Warm, dry weather allowed farmers in Saskatchewan to make excellent progress planting this year's crops, , according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s weekly Crop Report.

An estimated 35% of all crops have been planted, compared to 34% at this time last year and the recent 5-year average of just 10% sown by the end of the first week of May.

Seeding is most advanced in the southwest, where producers have 58% of the crop seeded. Fifty-one% of the crop is seeded in the southeast; 26% in the west-central region; 23% in the northeast; 21% in the northwest and 17% in the east-central region.

Cropland topsoil moisture is rated as 2% surplus, 74% adequate, 21% short and 3% very short. Many areas of the province did not receive rain last week. However, significant rain received earlier this week in much of the province will help alleviate concerns in some areas about dry topsoil moisture conditions.
