Good Planting Progress in Peas

PANAMA - May 8/16 - SNS -- Field pea markets finished the week on a generally firm tone.

Seeding of Canada's field pea crops is making similar progress to last year, with May starting with roughly 41% of the intended crop in the ground, compared to 40% at the same time last year.

Farmers in Saskatchewan, the main producing province, said they had planted 31% of this year's intended area, compared to 30% by the start of May last year.

Farmers in Alberta report they had planted 53% of their intended field pea acreage by the beginning of May, compared to 55% last year. Progress is similar to last year, but above the long term average. In its latest crop report, Alberta's provincial agriculture department noted that "soil moisture is a huge concern" across the entire province.
