Good Mustard Planting Progress

PANAMA - May 8/16 - SNS -- Over a quarter of this year's intended mustard seed area was in the ground in Saskatchewan as the month got underway, compared to a third by the start of May last year.

Seeding progress is also lagging last year in Alberta. Farmers in that province say they had planted 20.3% of the crop by the start of May, compared to 44.3% progress last year.

If farmers stick with their seeding intentions, just over 105,000 acres of this year's mustard seed crop had been planted at the beginning of the month, compared to 124,000 last year.

Statistics Canada released its stocks in all positions report during the week. Markets remain disappointed that mustard seed was removed from the interim reports because, even though often controversial, they had helped define supply fundamentals throughout the marketing year. However, given both the small size of the crop and the fact production is localized, it is unlikely Statistics Canada will reconsider its decision.
