Peas Unswayed By India's Crop Damage Debate

PANAMA - Mar 19/16 - SNS -- International field pea markets maintained their firm footing through the past week, despite conflicting information about damage to India's crops from recent hail and unseasonal rainfall events.

The country's chambers of commerce asserted that the country's wheat crop was down 13 million metric tons (MT) because of the weather problems. No information was available about potential damage to gram or chickpea crops, but such extensive damage to wheat certainly implies problems would show up in other crops.

India's Agriculture Department asserts the report by ASSOCHAM is "factually incorrect. In 2015-16, wheat production in the country is estimated at 93.82 million MT (2nd Advance Estimate).
