World Chickpeas Remain Strong

PANAMA - Mar 18/16 - SNS -- International chickpea markets remain strong, though slack short term demand from India took some of the life out of desi chickpeas during the past week.

Kabuli chickpeas continued to attract the most attention against doubts about production levels in Mexico and fears recent poor weather in parts of India may have damaged some of that country's crop.

Discussions about damage from unseasonal rains and frosts in some of India's states has focussed on wheat. The country's domestic industry thinks 13 million metric tons (MT) of wheat could be lost. The crop had been expected to reach 93.8 million MT. If

"The emerging wheat situation in the country is alarming in view of the expected lower crop, depleting stocks and the erratic weather threatening crop further towards maturity," argues the Association of Chambers of Commerce and Industry.
