Solid Movement Supports Peas

PANAMA - Feb 27/16 - SNS -- Export clearances of field peas from Canada have started the 2016 calendar year on a strong note, helping support yellow pea values on world markets.

Bulk clearances reported by the Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) were a record 250,900 metric tons (MT) in January, and reached 115,000 MT the first three weeks in February. Official export data is not yet available for January and will likely be lower because its reports are based on bill of lading dates.

One number that jumped out was that primary elevators in western Canada shipped 88,900 MT to the United States in January. Nearly all those peas should be for re-export because they are far in excess of normal domestic usage levels, whether for pet food or human consumption.
