Chickpea Markets Holding Firm
PANAMA - Feb 20/16 - SNS -- International desi chickpea markets finished the week on a firm note despite an increase in official production forecasts for India.
The country's agriculture department said it expected this year's rabi season chickpea harvest to reach 8.09 million metric tons (MT), up significantly from last year's 7.017 million MT harvest, but below the previous five-year averager harvest of 8.29 million.
Markets were not overly surprised by the number. While farmers did not increase land in all pulses this rabi season, there was a shift into desi type chickpeas.
