Mexican Net Pulse Exporter in 2015

VANCOUVER - Feb 16/16 - SNS -- Mexico will remain a net exporter of pulses in 2015 despite a steep drop in exports over last year.

Between January and November, exports of all pulses dropped 38% to just over 150,000 metric tons (MT), while imports fell 22% to around 130,000, according to data published in the platinum version of STAT.

The main pulse imported by Mexico are dry edible beans, which accounted for 63% of all pulse purchases the first 11 months of 2015, compared to 44% during the same period in 2014.

Lentils suffered most of the decline, with its share of Mexican imports sinking from 39% to 21%, while field peas slipped from 15% to 13% of all pulse import activity.

As expected, pulse exports were dominated by chickpeas, which accounted for 77% of all exports in 2015, compared to 63% the previous calendar year. That increase was at the expense of dry edible beans, which saw their share of Mexican pulse export activity drop from 25% to 20%.

Mexico's status as a net pulse exporter is in doubt for 2016 because of problems with its dry edible bean and chickpea crops. This is expected to result in a rebound in dry bean imports from the United States, while kabuli chickpea export sales suffer.
