Turkish Pulse Output in Decline

WASHINGTON - Feb 11/15 - SNS -- Lentil production should post a modest recovery in Turkey this year in response to newly implemented government supports for the crop, believes the U.S. agricultural attache for the country.

In recent years, production has collapsed from around 650,000 metric tons (MT) to 350,000 last year. But, thinks output could reach 360,000 MT this year.

Total pulse production in the country has been in decline for many years, especially between 2004 and 2014. The largest drop was in red lentil production with a 67% decrease, green lentil with 32% and chickpea with 27%. Total pulses production was 1.4 million MT in 2004, down from about 2 million MT in the 1990s. Pulses production in 2014 was about 1 million MT, down 40% from 2004.
