MELBOURNE - Feb 5/16 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Weather Situation A high near Tasmania will move slowly eastwards over the next few days and extends a ridge along the southern Queensland coast. A surface trough extends through inland Queensland from about Normanton to Birdsville. A moist tropical airmass lies over much of Queensland to the northeast of the trough. Another trough is currently located near Mackay, and should remain slow-moving over the weekend, before moving northwards early next week. Forecast for the rest of SaturdayWidespread showers, rain areas and and some thunderstorms with possible heavy falls about the tropical east coast and nearby inland, particularly the Central coast and Capricornia. Slight to moderate chance of showers near the remaining central and southern coasts. Slight to moderate chance of showers and thunderstorms throughout much of the rest of the state apart from the northwest where fine and mostly sunny conditions will prevail. Light to moderate southwest to northwesterly winds over the tropics, moderate to fresh east to southeasterly winds in the south.Sunday 7 FebruaryThe coastal trough will most likely move slowly north as the firm ridge extending along the east coast begins to weaken. Widespread showers, rain areas and a few thunderstorms are likely to continue about the Central Coast, and possibly extend northwards to the Herbert and Lower Burdekin and eastern tropical inland. Some showers will likely continue near the remaining east coast in the onshore wind flow. The inland trough will most likely continue shifting westwards maintaining the slight chance of a shower over western districts. The slight to medium chance of a shower over remaining southern and southeastern parts.Monday 8 FebruaryThe coastal trough will most likely continue to move northwards towards the north tropical coast, producing further showers, rain areas and thunderstorms. Some showers will likely continue near the remaining east coast in the onshore wind flow. The inland trough will most likely continue shifting westwards, however conditions should stabilise in the west and over the central and southern interior of the state due to some drier southeasterly winds.Tuesday 9 FebruaryThe coastal trough will most likely continue to slowly move northwards with showers and storms likely to continue across the tropics. A high over the Tasman Sea will extend a ridge along the east Queensland coast with a slight to moderate chance of showers about east coast in the onshore flow. Fine and mostly sunny conditions will continue about most parts of the interior of the state.Wednesday until FridayThe coastal trough will most likely continue to slowly move northwards and merge with a monsoonal trough over the far north. Further showers are likely along the east coast, possibly heavy over the wet tropics, although thunderstorms are likely to become confined to the far north and northwest. Some showers will likely continue near the remaining east coast in the onshore wind flow.
