Controversy Over Stocks Report

OTTAWA - Feb 4/16 - SNS -- Canada's December 31 stocks in all positions estimates were higher than expected for field peas, while pointing to unusually tight inventory levels for lentils.

As of December 31, Statistics Canada says there were 2.212 million metric tons (MT) of field peas available for all purposes during the remaining seven months of the marketing year. At 2.07 million MT, farmers said they were holding 20,000 MT fewer peas than the previous year; while commercial inventories were down 42,000 MT at 142,000. Inferred disappearance for field peas is down significantly form the previous year at 1.42 million MT, or just 39% of the available supply.

Lentil inventories on December 31 totalled 869,000 MT, compared to 1.65 million MT the previous year. On-farm stocks were less than half the previous year at just 720,000 MT, while commercial inventories were up 45,000 MT at 149,000. Implied disappearance for lentils totals a record 1.87 million MT or 68% of the available supply.
