South Africa Dry Bean Output Plunges

PRETORIA - Jan 27/16 - SNS -- Drought has devastated this year's dry edible bean crop potential in South Africa, according to preliminary seeded area and production estimates for the country.

Estimates released by the South Africa Grain Information Service (SAGIS) said instead of seeding an expected 51,500 hectares, land in beans will sink to just 25,500 hectares because the soil in many areas was too dry to risk planting the crop.

The situation is similar for other field crops, with preliminary seeded area estimates falling below this year's intentions.
