Moderate Gains In Chickpea Plantings

PANAMA - Jan 18/16 - SNS -- Neither plantings nor production of all categories of chickpeas are not expected to set any records during the coming year.

Global seeded area for both classes advance from last year's dismal 31.13 million hectares to a possible 33.6 million, but area remains well short of the recent record of 35.2 million sown in 2014. On the other hand, land should be above the recent five year average of 33.24 million hectares.

Global trade could be up over the 2015-16 marketing campaign, partly reflecting ongoing, strong demand from the Indian subcontinent. Demand is expected to be little changed during the coming marketing campaign, especially for Australia's desi chickpeas.
