53% Jump in Lentil Harvest

WASHINGTON - Jan 12/16 - SNS -- U.S. lentil production ended up at 5.28 million cwt (100 pound units) or 239,499 meric tons (MT), up 53% from the previous year, according to the USDA's final crop report for 2015.

Area for harvest is estimated at 476,000 acres, up 84% from the previous year. Average yield is 1,108 pounds per acre, down 223 pounds from 2014. Planted and harvested area are the second highest on record, behind only the 2010 season.

In North Dakota, planting was complete by the end of May, approximately three weeks ahead of last year. Harvest began in early August and was complete by the last week of September, also about three weeks ahead of last season. Moisture supplies were rated adequate to surplus throughout the season. In Idaho, Montana, and Washington high temperatures and drought-like conditions throughout the growing season reduced yields from 2014.
