Pea Harvest Ends Up 7%

WASHINGTON - Jan 12/16 - SNS -- Last year's dry edible peas ended up at 18.3 million cwt (100 pound units) or 830,083 metric tons (MT), up 7% from the previous year, according to the USDA's final crop report for 2015.

Planted area, at 1,143,000 acres, and harvested area, at 1,083,500 acres, increased by 22% and 20%, respectively. Planted and harvested acreage and production are at record high levels. Average yield is 1,687 pounds per acre, down 220 pounds from 2014.

In Montana, planting was nearly finished by mid-May, ahead of last year's pace. Harvest began in mid-July and was finishing up by late August. The crop was rated mostly fair to good throughout the season. In North Dakota, harvest began in early August and wrapped up by early September. Excessive heat and dry conditions reduced yields in Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington from 2014.
