South Africa Bean Area To Sink

PRETORIA - Oct 27/15 - SNS -- Dry edible bean area will fall dramatically in South Africa if farmers hold true to their current seeding intentions.

In its first report for the coming year the South Africa Grain Information Service (SAGIS) said farmers expect to slash bean area from 64,000 to 51,500 hectares, despite relatively strong international markets.

The 20% decline in dry edible bean area is part of a shift towards oilseeds in South Africa. Land in soybeans is expected to increases modestly to 696,400 hectares, while sunflower area is expected to rise 7% to 614,000 hectares. In grains, farmers intend to reduce land in corn for the third year in a row, expecting to plant 4% less at 2.55 million hectares.
