Bean Area May Inch Upward

WASHINGTON - Mar 31/15 - SNS -- Dry edible bean and chickpea seedings in the United States are expected to inch up just 1% to 1.74 million acres, according to the USDA's seeding intentions report for 2015.

Half of the 18 estimating States expect an increase in planted acres from last year. Colorado growers expect a 50% increase from the previous year, while in North Dakota, the largest producing State, planted area is expected to decrease by 20,000 acres, or 3%, from 2014.

Expected area planted for all chickpeas is 196,900 acres, down 8% from last season. Small chickpeas, at 69,500 acres, is 4% above 2014, while large chickpeas, at 127,400 acres, decreased 14% from the previous year.
