South Africa Cuts Bean Estimate

VANCOUVER - Mar 25/15 - SNS -- The yield outlook for South Africa's dry edible bean crop continues to deteriorate, with the South Africa Grain Information Service (SAGIS) further reducing this year's production forecast.

Average yields for dry edible beans are now expected to fall almost 20% from last year. The net result is production is forecast to drop 8% to just under 76,000 metric tons (MT) despite a 15% jump in plantings to 64,000 hectares.

More significantly, however, land in beans has steadily increased since 2012 as growers took advantage of higher average prices for the commodity.
