Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Mar 4/15 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A weak ridge lies along the east coast of Queensland and will continue to weaken through Thursday. An upper level trough is moving westwards through the northern tropics and will move westwards through the Gulf of Carpentaria during tomorrow. A surface trough over the interior of the state will move north and eastwards during Thursday, contracting off the southern coast late Thursday afternoon or evening. Hot conditions currently over western Queensland will shift into central and southeast parts of the state during Thursday.
Forecast for the rest of WednesdayA medium to high chance of showers and possible storms over the northern and eastern tropics. Just the slight chance of a shower about the remaining east coast north of St Lawrence. A slight to medium chance of showers and storms in the far west. A slight chance of a shower over the Carnarvon Ranges. Fine and mostly clear elsewhere. Moderate southeast to northeasterly winds, tending southwest to southeasterly in the southern interior.Thursday 5 MarchJust the slight chance of a late afternoon or evening shower or thunderstorm near the southern coast and through the Wide Bay and Capricornia. A slight to medium chance of showers and storms through the northern tropics and northwest. Fine and mostly sunny conditions are expected elsewhere. Hot to very hot conditions will spread to much of central, southern and southeast Queensland whilst cooler conditions will move into far southwest parts. Moderate southeast to northeasterly winds through the tropics and along the east coast. Moderate to fresh and gusty south to southwesterly winds through much of southern Queensland.Fire Danger - Severe in the Darling Downs and Granite Belt district. Very High elsewhere about the central, southern and southeast interior.Friday 6 MarchThe surface trough and a fresh southeasterly wind change will progress further northwards towards central coast waters and extend into the central interior. The trough will generate some showers and also the possibility of storms over areas north of about Mt Isa to Clermont to Fraser Island. The southeast should be mostly fine with just the slight chance of a shower. Fine and sunny conditions are expected in the west with temperatures decreasing further, particularly in the southwest. Temperatures will also be much cooler about the southeast of the state in the cooler southerly flow.Saturday 7 MarchA high over the Tasman Sea will extend a weak ridge along the east Queensland coast. The surface trough will shift further westwards into the interior of the state, while an upper level trough will most likely lie from the northwest of the state into the southern interior by late in the day. This will result in a slight to medium chance of showers and storms over northern and central districts, extending into the central west during the day. Fine and mostly sunny conditions will continue through remaining western parts. Just the slight chance of a shower is expected in the southeast.Sunday 8 MarchA high over the Tasman Sea will maintain the ridge along the east Queensland coast. Another upper trough is expected to move into the southwest of the state whilst the surface trough will remain slow moving over the interior. This setup will maintain instability through northern and central districts as well as through the southern interior. Fine and mostly sunny conditions will continue through remaining western parts. Just the slight chance of a shower is expected in the southeast under the influence of the ridge.Monday until WednesdayThe monsoon is expected to reform over the northern Coral Sea during the outlook period, while high pressure centres in the Tasman Sea will maintain a ridge along the east Queensland coast. A series of upper troughs are expected to move northeastwards over the state, while a surface trough will remain slow moving over the interior. Showers and storms should therefore continue through northern districts and near the surface trough over the central west and southern interior. Some showers are likely near the remaining east coast in the onshore wind flow. Fine and mostly sunny conditions should persist in the far west. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 am EST Thursday.Product IDQ10700
