Dry Bean Crop Up 29% Over 2013

WASHINGTON - Jan 12/15 - SNS -- Production of dry edible beans is estimated at 29.2 million cwt, up 19% from last year, according to the USDA's final crop estimates for 2014.

Planted area is estimated at 1.72 million acres, up 26% from 2013. Harvested area is estimated at 1.67 million acres, 27% above the previous year. The average United States yield is estimated at 1,753 pounds per acre, a decrease of 114 pounds from last year's yield.

In North Dakota, harvest was 95% complete by October 26, ahead of last year and the 5-year average. Near average rainfall was common throughout most of the growing season, except for drought conditions reported in the southeastern region during October. The crop was rated mostly fair to good throughout the season.
