MELBOURNE - Dec 18/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of New South Wales was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Weather Situation A weak high is off the New South Wales coast and a cold front is moving through Bass Strait. A trough over the northeast of the state and the associated thunderstorm activity is expected to contract northeast overnight or early Friday. The cold front is expected to reach the south coast tonight, and the far north coast Friday afternoon or evening. It will bring a vigorous southerly airstream initially but is likely to ease later in the day. High pressure is then expected to become established off the coast again during Saturday with a ridge north to the Queensland coast. The high will remain over the Tasman Sea for a number of days whilst another trough of low pressure develops over the west of the state. This is likely to bring further unsettled weather from Monday across much of the state. The trough should be slow-moving with little change to the pattern through much of next week. Forecast for the rest of ThursdayShowers and thunderstorms in the northeast, possibly severe, contracting further northeast during the evening. Showers developing over the southeast corner. Fine elsewhere. Northeasterly winds near the coast, and northwest winds inland, with a southwesterly change extending from the west and reaching the south coast tonight.Friday 19 DecemberA shower or two and possible thunderstorm in the early morning on the far north coast. The chance of a shower or some drizzle patches about the tablelands, mainly in the evening. Fine elsewhere. Southeast to southwesterly winds extending throughout the northeast by the late afternoon, fresh to strong along the coast, but easing later.Fire Danger - Very High for the Far North Coast, Northern Slopes, North Western and the Upper Central West Plains fire districts.Saturday 20 DecemberThe chance of showers or drizzle patches about the ranges and north coast. Fine and generally sunny west of the Divide. East to southeast winds near the coast, tending light and variable inland.Sunday 21 DecemberThe chance of showers and thunderstorms over the northeast and northern inland. The chance of an afternoon shower over southern coastal ranges. Fine elsewhere. Hot and sunny in the far west. East to northeast winds.Monday 22 DecemberShowers and thunderstorms, mostly on and west of the ranges. Hot in the west.
