Brazil Pulse Imports Remain Low

Dec 9/14 - SNS -- Pulse purchases by Brazil improved in October, with official imports coming in higher than the same month last year, according to data from Scavage, Foreign Trade Statistics.

Even so, data contained in the platinum version of STAT reveals imports are still down 55% from last year in the January through October period, at almost 159,000 metric tons (MT), compared to 356,000.

Improved availability of pulses in Argentina has seen official imports from that origin more than double.

Purchases of dry edible beans have pushed past 89,000 MT, while imports from China have plunged from almost 222,500 to just 5,670 MT so far this calendar year.

It is not possible for imports to approach last year's totals, making this the least active year since 2009. However, imports are expected to recover in 2015 on the basis of more competitive prices from China and doubts about domestic production.
