Massive Drop in Global Green Lentil Crop

VANCOUVER - Dec 6/14 - SNS -- International lentil markets finished the week on a firm note against smaller than expected production estimates for both Canada and Australia.

Most lentils grown in Australia are red, while that class accounted for a record 72% of total output in Canada, compared to the recent five-year average of 50%.

The numbers suggest global lentil output could fall below four million metric tons (MT) for the first time since 2009, continuing a downward trend in output since the world's lentil harvest peaked at 4.985 million MT in 2010.
