U.S. Durum Output Down 2%

WASHINGTON - Sep 30/14 - SNS -- Durum wheat production for 2014 is estimated at 57.1 million bushels, down 2% from the revised 2013 total, according to the USDA's latest crop production estimates.

Grain area harvested totaled 1.37 million acres, up 3% from the previous year. The United States yield is estimated at 41.6 bushels per acre, down 1.7 bushels from 2013. Production in North Dakota, the largest Durum-producing State, is up 4% from last year. A record high yield is estimated in South Dakota.

Due to excessive moisture this season, crop development has progressed significantly behind normal in Montana and North Dakota, the two largest Durum-producing States. As a result, harvest progress in North Dakota and Montana as of August 31 was well behind last year and the 5-year average.
