Small Improvement in Sorghum Yields

WASHINGTON - Sep 11/14 - SNS -- Sorghum production is forecast at 430 million bushels, up less than 1% from last month and up 11% from last year, according to the USDA's latest crop forecasts.

Area harvested for grain is forecast at 6.40 million acres, unchanged from August 1 but down 2% from 2013. Based on September 1 conditions, yield is forecast at 67.2 bushels per acre, up 0.1 bushel from last month and up 7.6 bushels from last year. Records high yields are forecast in Oklahoma and South Dakota.

As of August 31, 37% of the sorghum crop was mature, 7 percentage points ahead of last year and 8 percentage points ahead of the five-year average. Harvest progress had reached 25% at this time, 2 percentage points behind last year but slightly ahead of the 5-year average. Roughly 57% of the crop was rated in good to excellent condition, compared with 54% last year at this time.
