U.S. Pulls N.A. Bean Supply Higher

VANCOUVER - Aug 15/14 - SNS -- Available supplies of dry edible beans will be up significantly in North America this year largely because of a 23% jump in seeded area in the United States.

In this week's crop report, the USDA said farmers in that country planted 1.672 million acres of all classes of dry edible beans. If chickpeas are ignored, land in beans rose 27% to 1.448 million acres.

The combined number is well below the 1.75 million acres farmers originally intended to plant. The biggest changes from the intentions took place in North Dakota, Nebraska and Colorado with area in the three states ending up 105,000 acres less than intended. That was partly offset by a 20,000 acre gain in actual planted area in Minnesota and a 3,000 acre increase in California.
