U.S. Rice Ouput Jumps

WASHINGTON - Aug 12/14 SNS -- American rice production is forecast at 229 million cwt (100 pound units), up 20% from last year, according to the USDA's latest crop production forecast.

Area for harvest is expected to total 3.03 million acres, unchanged from June but 23% higher than 2013. Based on conditions as of August 1, the average United States yield is forecast at 7,560 pounds per acre, down 134 pounds from last year. A record high yield is expected in Texas.

By August 3, 60% of the United States acreage was heading, 9 percentage points ahead of last year and 2 percentage points ahead of the five-year average. Seventy-one% of the rice crop was reported in good to excellent condition at this time, slightly better than at the same time last year.
