Sorghum Seen 10% Bigger

WASHINGTON - Aug 12/14 SNS -- Sorghum production is forecast at 429 million bushels, up 10% from last year, according to the USDA's latest crop production forecast.

Area harvested for grain is forecast at 6.40 million acres, unchanged from June but down 2% from 2013. Based on August 1 conditions, yield is forecast at 67.1 bushels per acre, up 7.5 bushels from last year. Records high yields are forecast in Mississippi and Oklahoma.

As of August 3, 55% of the sorghum crop was headed, 2 percentage points ahead of last year and slightly ahead of the five year average. Fifty-nine% of the crop was rated in good to excellent condition, compared with 47% at the same time last year.
